The Review:
Hollywood has a history of making sequels for just about any movie that sees any sort of profit as the people who sit behind desks and count all the money figure if it worked once, it's bound to work again. That being said, a Croods sequel was bound to happen and I really didn't mind as the first one is a really fun movie and I for one was genuinely interested to see what adventures the prehistoric family might be up to next. After a delay or two due to the pandemic theater restrictions, the movie ended up being released on Amazon around the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.
By then, it was so under the radar, I had mostly forgotten about and finally got around to watching it right before Christmas. I say this because, while it is a reasonably fun and entertaining movie, it is also a very forgettable movie and I can see why it's release landed with a bit of an unnoticed thud. The additions of Leslie Mann, Peter Dinklage, and Kelly Marie Tran as the Betterman family really didn't add much to the story except for being kind of ambiguous antagonists. They're not bad people, but who they are causes the Crood family to go through some serious questions about who they are and how they exist based on some major technological differences.
As you would expect, the animation is absolutely beautiful and I would have loved to have seen it on a big screen and even in 3D I'm sure would have been stunning. I like how they stick to the very distinct visual style that was established in the first movie as opposed to trying for any type of photo realism or even doing much to change the look based on advancements in technology. If nothing else, this movie is just beautiful to look at and, for parents, I imagine the movie is more than enough to keep kids entertained for a couple hours. Outside of that, it's a take it or leave it type of movie.
The Verdict:
The Croods: A New Age is wonderful to look at although you probably won't remember the story very long after watching it. I wouldn't say don't watch the movie just don't bring any expectations when you hit the play button.
