The Movie: What Lies Below
The Director: Braden R. Duemmler
The Cast: Ema Horvath, Trey Tucker, Mena Suvari
The Story: A 16 year-old girl returns home from camp and learns that her mother has a new boyfriend, one she intends to marry to, a man whose charm, intelligence and beauty make him look like he's not human at all.
The Review:
This movie is very much the dark and twisted horror movie you are expecting it to be even if it starts out like an adaptation of a cheesy romance novel. Trey Tucker is every bit the steamy hunk you might find on the cover of one of those novels and he plays it up as much as he possibly can which is sometimes laughable but it also gets the point across for where this movie is going. It was also great to see Mena Suvari, most known for her work in American Beauty and American Pie and I have a thought that we might be seeing a lot more of her in the future.
In the lead role is Ema Horvath who was just in another horror movie, an anthology film called The Mortuary Collection. She plays a pivotal role in a segment called Unprotected which I labelled as an American Pie horror story so I guess it's fitting she now plays the daughter to Mena Suvari's character in this movie. Bam! Look how I tied that all together. Anyway, Ema is fantastic in that movie and she is also really good in this one as well. After watching her in these two films, I feel like she is heading towards being a breakout star at least within the genre if not overall.
It seems like this year, as weird as it's been, has seen a near endless supply of horror movies in all shapes and sizes and, since I am a fan of the genre, I am here for all of it. This movie in a lot of ways hits on the 80's straight to video, late night USA network movie vibe and with that in mind, it really works and is a lot of fun. If you try to dig deep into the nuances and subtleties of storytelling, you will probably get frustrated and become unsatisfied so just kick back with your popcorn and other assorted snacks, turn the lights off and enjoy the creepiness and awkward sex vibes this movie is stuffed to the gills with.
The Verdict:
What Lies Below is classic b-movie genre fare and a throwback to late nights at the drive in or watching cable TV. Definitely worth a shot if you're into that sort of thing, I had a lot of fun watching it.
