The Review:
It took quite a while before I finally decided to watch this movie and when I finally did, I was like what was I waiting so long for! Dave Bautista is proving to be a very strong and versatile leading man, he can do action, super hero, comedy, and of course comes from a background in professional wrestling. And now, after this movie, we know he can handle a spy comedy with a child co-star. It seems like the man has great chemistry with anyone he works with and I just loved the interactions in this movie between him and his young co-star Chloe Coleman.
The story is honestly pretty basic as far as spy comedies go so the movie really depends on the actors to carry the show and they absolutely do. Chloe Coleman is so much fun as her character Sophie works every angle and advantage that she can against Bautista's former soldier turned CIA spy. Their interactions and the chemistry they have on screen just makes the whole thing worthwhile. What's fun too is how Bautista can maintain a wholesome playfulness no matter whether he is being schooled by a nine year old or being attacked by international criminals.
The action and fight scenes are also pretty tame I guess considering the audience for this movie should skew much younger than your average spy thriller but there's still enough going on to keep the movie at a good pace and the explosive finale is a fun way to wrap things up. Overall, I liked this movie way more than I was expecting to and most of that is owed to Bautista who really should be a top tier box office stat for years to come. He has the look, the charisma, and he's just a lot of fun to watch. Also, if he and The Rock are going to collectively carry that mantle then it's a big win for representation at the highest level of Hollywood stardom.
The Verdict:
My Spy is a fun and, dare I say this, family friendly spy comedy thriller action movie. It's got pretty much everything you could ask for from this type of movie and is capped off with two of the most likeable actors you might ever find.
