The Review:
This movie is based off of a true story which is such a tragic tale but it's also inspiring at the same time because we see perseverance and friendship come through within the people and the family. The main reason I decided to watch the movie is because I really like Dakota Johnson and she doesn't disappoint in any way while giving a powerful performance that really digs into what it's like for a human being to physically and mentally deteriorate from disease. It's a very sad performance and even more so because she is playing a real person who is essentially the core of the story.
Both Casey Affleck and Jason Segel were about what I expected them to be although I felt like Segel didn't really fit the part or the somber tone of the movie. His character is supposed to be kind of a funny, goofy guy but whenever he was on screen I just saw the person we normally see from movies that are intentionally funny and goofy and there wasn't enough depth for me to buy in. Affleck is always at least solid if not great and that's exactly what he was in this movie. Nothing that really stood out but also nothing that was in any way a detriment to the movie either.
That's really how I feel about the movie as a whole and I really don't have much else to say.
The Verdict:
Our Friend is a decent movie with one great performance, an okay one, and a not so great one. I wanted to be emotionally involved given the subject matter but the story never drew me in on that level so at the end, I was just like. Okay, that's a movie.
