The Review:
Okay, so here's the deal. If I've seen any of the movies in this franchise, I do not remember them at all but that doesn't have any impact at all on whether or not I was able to enjoy this movie. If there is any sort of connection, I was completely unaware of it and the movie stands alone and stands very tall as a highly effective horror thriller with an ending that had me cheering at how fantastic of a finish it has. Seriously, I thought this was a good movie, but the way director Mike P. Nelson wraps things up is just brilliantly unexpected and fun and I mean right through to the end of the credits.
The first act of the movie is a pretty standard version of young people in the woods running into unexpected danger although it is executed very well and never really feels like it was copied from anything else. We get to know the characters just well enough and then it's time to start killing them off but then the movie takes an unexpected turn into completely different territory that might remind you of M. Night Shyamalan's The Village but again still has a story all its own. There's actually a decent amount of world building that takes place in the movie and I could definitely see more stories coming out of what we see in this one.
I haven't even mentioned yet that Matthew Modine is in this movie which is pretty cool because I've been watching him in movies since Visions Quest and Full Metal Jacket. He honestly doesn't have a lot to do in this movie other than being the concerned dad although this could just be opening his character up for more if we do get to see a direct sequel or two. The lead role actually goes to Emma Dumont who plays the daughter of Modine's character and, seeing how this is a horror movie, she goes through quite a bit over the course of the movie.
The Verdict:
Wrong Turn turns this franchise in the right direction with some fresh ideas, legit scares, and an ending that is one of the best I have seen from any movie in quite a while.
