Nobody - Movie Review

The Movie: Nobody

The Director: Ilya Naishuller

The Cast: Bob Odenkirk, Connie Nielsen, RZA, Alexey Serebryakov, Christopher Lloyd

The Story: A bystander who intervenes to help a woman being harassed by a group of men becomes the target of a vengeful drug lord.

The Review:
Sometimes you just want to watch an aged, grizzled, been there done that, bad ass, unassuming type of guy beat the crap out of a bunch of low life miscreants for an hour and a half and this movie is exactly that. Ilya Naishuller's other feature film is Hardcore Henry which basically follows a guy from a first person perspective as he fights his way through an action filled story, and while kind of cheesy and gimmicky, it was also a very enjoyable exercise in indulgence. While this movie isn't nearly as stylized, it definitely has a unique style all its own while at the same time tackling territory we have seen multiple times from the likes of Liam Neeson and Keanu Reeves.

After watching this movie, I am happy to say that we can now add Bob Odenkirk to that roster of talented actors who have taken on what I guess we could now call a genre unto itself. Odenkirk even gets his very own memorable catch phrase, “Give me the gawd damn kitty cat bracelet, motherf*cker!!”, to go along with Neeson's "I have a particular set of skills" and Reeves' "People keep asking if I'm back and I haven't really had an answer. But now, yeah, I'm thinkin' I'm back." There's a censored version of the phrase in the trailer but you've got to see it and hear it in all it's profane glory to get the full effect.

What I like most about this movie is that it 100% delivers on the promise of the type of movie you are expecting it to be and probably even more. The stakes keep getting raised and every step of the way, there are satisfying payoffs that will have you cheering along. As I was watching the movie, I felt there are a lot of similarities in style to Kick-Ass but not at all in the sense of being a super hero movie, more like how the fighting and action is stylized in a pretty brutal manner. If you remember the scene in Kick-Ass where Big Daddy disposes of a group of mob thugs and then burns down the warehouse they are in, this movie is basically that scene expanded out to ninety minutes.

That being said, you should be warned that the fighting and violence is pretty hardcore and bloody so take that into consideration when deciding whether or not you want to watch the movie. I would say it is a bit more graphic than a John Wick movie and a fair amount less in regards to the high flying action. This is more of a street fight in a back alley type movie although no less epic and fun. I'm wondering if this movie and the Hutch Mansell character could become a franchise like the others I've mentioned. For my part, I would love to see it happen.

The Verdict:
Nobody is everything I was hoping it would be and Bob Odenkirk may have just established himself as a new franchise icon. Ilya Naishuller's second feature film is a non stop action, packed kick in the face that leaves a trail of blood and bodies from beginning to end.
