The
Seattle Asian American Film Festival
is back for another year although this time with a virtual setup that will
allow people within certain geo locked regions to enjoy the festival from the
comfort of their own homes. The festival will begin on Thursday March 4th with
an Opening Night program and will conclude on Sunday March 14th. Below you
will find the six films, five features and one short, that I have selected as
this year's TwoOhSix Picks.
- And Then (Queer AF shorts block)
This short film by Seattleite Jenn Ravenna Tran is a love story set in Tokyo
and it looks just beautiful. I've been wanting to watch this film for quite
a while so excited to finally get the chance.
Definition Please spells out the ups and downs of a dysfunctional family in
a very lighthearted yet meaningful way. Check out my interview with director
Sujata Day on the TwoohSix.com Changing Directions podcast series. We talk
about the film and lots of other cool stuff.
- Far East Deep South (Centerpiece Documentary)
My one documentary selection for the festival looks like a really
interesting journey into some seriously unknown southern history.
I wanted to see this at another festival but missed my chance. Happy to have
another opportunity to see this movie which is musical feature film from
writer, director, producer and lyricist Mallorie Ortega.
I'm expecting this film to have the biggest emotional punch of any of the
movies playing during the festival. Please make sure to check out this film
from director Trinh Dinh Le Minh.
- The Paper Tigers (Centerpiece Narrative)
The Paper Tigers is cinematic comfort food that hits all the right spots. It's
dim sum at Purple Dot and then a walk through Hing Hay Park on a Sunday
afternoon. Check out my interview with director Bao Tran on the TwoOhSix.com
New Directions in Film podcast series. We talk about the movie and what it
meant to make a film right here in the Emerald City.
There you have it! I hope you are able to enjoy the festival while supporting
the local Seattle arts community and all of the filmmakers who are
participating. Keep track of all my reviews and festival coverage please go
to: TwoOhSix at SAAFF 2021.
The Seattle Asian American Film Festival (SAAFF) showcases feature-length and
short format films by and about Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across
North America, with an emphasis on filmmakers from the Pacific Northwest.
SAAFF is the only film festival in Seattle to provide a space for Asian
American voices, perspectives and histories by screening independent films
that reflect the diversity and richness of the city’s Asian American and
Pacific Islander communities.
