The Banishing - Movie Review

The Movie: The Banishing

The Director: Christopher Smith

The Cast: Jessica Brown Findlay, Sean Harris, John Lynch, and John Heffernan

The Story: A young reverend and his wife and daughter move into a manor with a horrifying secret. When a vengeful spirit haunts the little girl and threatens to tear the family apart, the reverend and his wife are forced to confront their beliefs.

The Review:
It seems like the last couple years, there has been a non stop flood of new horror movies hitting theaters and streaming services which can definitely be a good thing although it also means the overall quality can get a bit watered down. Unfortunately, that is the case with this film as it really offers nothing new to the genre and it feels like bits and pieces of other movies that have been stitched together in hopes of creating something new.

The overall tone of the movie is very methodical and dark although I never felt like it was scary it all. There is no tension or any real jump scares to speak of so it felt more like a dark religious drama that just happens to have some elements of horror sprinkled in. I think the performances from the cast were decent enough although working with subpar material really didn't give them much to do. Sean Harris is solid on the movie mainly because his presence and personality automatically bring some weight and watchability to whatever character he is portraying.

The Banishing falls flat and loses steam before it ever really has a chance to get started. You can watch it now on Shudder but there's a lot of other movies on the platform you should check out first.
