The Review:
This is one of those movies that knows exactly what it is and what it's trying to accomplish and does all of it in as entertaining of a manner as you are hoping for. The time loop movie is now a full fledged genre with multiple entries just over the last couple years alone. I really like Joe Carnahan's take on the idea and gives it a few twists that are perfect for this type of action movie. Carnahan has been in the director's chair for some great action movies like The A-Team, The Grey, and Smokin' Aces all of which he also wrote the screenplays for.
I've been waiting for Frank Grillo to get a lead role like this so he can really show off everything that we have seen him do in supporting roles like his characters in the MCU and Purge franchises, as well as a brief yet underrated dramatic performance in Warrior. Grill ois more than capable of carrying an action movie and he proves that with this film especially having to redo scenes over and over in different ways thanks to the time loop scenario. The action gets going right from the opening moments and seriously does not let up all the way through to the end.
You would think that action scenes in a time loop movie might get redundant and stale after a while, but Carnahan and his crew find really fun ways to keep things fresh and just different enough with lots of crazy twists and turns. I know I'm heaping a lot of praise on this movie and I don't want you to think it's some groundbreaking tour de force that will change movies forever, it's really not. What it does do it does very well and fans of shoot 'em up action movies, martial arts, and gun fu are going to enjoy seeing them all set into the time loop scenario.
The Verdict:
Boss Level levels up the time loop genre with a heavy dose of action and a constantly repeating story that doesn't ever feel repetitive. Frank Grillo is a legit action star and I hope he gets more opportunities like this in the future.
