The Review:
I'm always hopeful that the next horror movie I watch is going to be something special or at least reasonably entertaining and I try to watch as many as I can because I love the genre but that also leads to a fair amount of missteps along the way. This movie is the second feature film from the directing duo of David Charbonier and Justin Powell and I think there were some really good ideas that went into the film, I just don't feel that it was executed in a way that would give the anticipated tension and scares.

Once the second act was firmly underway and the boy was trapped inside his home with a demonic presence, I realized that I didn't really want to see a kid go through all of the standard tropes and jump scare moments, it just didn't feel right. Also, because it's one kid, alone in a house, any sense of danger or peril is completely lost. There's no way, he doesn't make it through to the end and some of the scenes that are supposed to be intense and dangerous just completely fall flat. I mean why is this super scary monster having such a hard time with the kid?

I do like some of the themes of resilience and accepting who you are as a person but it's not enough to make the journey worthwhile so I will just say that this was a well intended and valiant attempt but the end result was lacking any real scares or the necessary tension to make it an effective horror story.
