The Review:
I have been a fan of this franchise since the first installment way back when Ethan Hawke kicked things off as the central character in what was essentially a home invasion story. The thing that made the first movie as unique and intriguing as it was is the bigger picture story that opened up a world we all knew could exist at any point in the near future. The politics, the social dilemmas, and the corporate influence on everything have each been major influences on the storylines for each movie and also seem to have escalated as the franchise has progressed.
Now we have not just one night but a promise of a never ending purge where anarchy and lawlessness are the laws of the land as extremists look to end America as we know it. Or at least as it's known in this hyper reality Purge-verse I guess I will call it. this movie releases the hounds so to speak on the rich and entitled and racist elitists across the entire country, a land where these types of folks have overly enjoyed the spoils of the privilege that they built on the backs of poor people and minorities. You would think this would be portrayed as a heroic rebellion that attempts to take down the establishment and yet what we get is basically neo nazis who have decided to throw the mega tantrum that we all believe they are capable of.
I think writer James DeMonaco and director Everardo Gout wanted to go all in with current events by placing the story ad the Mexican border and incorporating elements of human trafficking, undocumented labor, and immigrants trying to make a life for themselves while struggling against a system that promises freedom yet delivers oppression. This movie is really trying to say a lot and it's desperately trying to be as relevant as possible in today's political and social climate and yet I feel like it doesn't really say much at all in those contexts. On the other hand, it does deliver on what I expect from the franchise with outlandish evil characters, some shoot em up and beat em up action sequences, and some not so good acting because why would you care about good acting in a movie like this.
Basically what I'm trying to say is that The Forever Purge is exactly what I expected it to be, it's exactly what I wanted it to be, and it somehow finds a way to be as entertaining as I was hoping it would be. I could easily pick this movie apart and tear it down for various reasons but why. Just enjoy the movie for what it is and if it's not your bag then don't. There's other movies out there to watch.
