The Eyes of Tammy Faye - Movie Review

The Movie: The Eyes of Tammy Faye

The Director: Michael Showalter

The Cast: Jessica Chastain, Andrew Garfield, Cherry Jones, Vincent D’Onofrio

The Story: An intimate look at the extraordinary rise, fall and redemption of televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker.

The Review:
Jessica Chastain has been one of my favorite actors for several years now and this movie proves that I will watch anything she is in. Andrew Garfield has been one of my least favorite actors ever since his debut as Peter Parker in those horrible Spider-Man movies and, while I don't blame him for how bad those movies were, I just have never been a fan of his work no matter the movie. The subject matter isn't really something that's in my wheelhouse so I really just showed up for Jessica Chastain and a little bit of Vincent D’Onofrio who is always good in everything he does.

After watching the movie, I have to say it is perfectly suited for an awards season run although that doesn't at all mean that I liked the movie in any way shape or form. It just has all the makings of the type of movie that the majority of Academy voters, the ones who have been there for years and even decades, love to see because they see themselves and it is representative of who they are. That's the same reason why this movie did absolutely nothing for me and the only reason I finished watching it is so I could legitimately write this review and I guess also because I rarely ever leave a movie unfinished.

One of my biggest problems with the movie is how, the farther into the movie you go, the more it looks and feels like a Saturday Night Live skit which became humorously ironic when there was an actual SNL clip shown with some other TV clips and news footage. It was hard to take the movie seriously at any real point as seeing Andrew Garfield trying to play the role took me out of every scene and even Chastain's valiant effort could barely hold it all together.

The Verdict:
The Eyes of Tammy Faye isn't much to look at unless you want a deeper dive into the controversial story that made headlines and was on the news for years. Chastain is amazing. That's about it.
