Venom: Let There Be Carnage - Movie Review

The Movie: Venom: Let There be Carnage

The Director: Andy Serkis

The Cast: Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams, Naomie Harris, Woody Harrelson

The Story: There really isn't one. At least not one that makes any sense.

The Review:
Sony, it's time. You failed miserably with your "Amazing" Spider-Man movies and nothing you've done, or threatened to do, since has given me any indication you will not continue to drive your slice of the Marvel multiverse into the ground. The first Venom movie was watchable only because Tom Hardy was so good in it so I was at least willing to consider the possibility that this movie would again at least be watchable. Nope.

From the very beginning, the movie is what I would describe as nails on the chalkboard annoying and it never lets up. The interactions between Venom and Eddie Brock are so ridiculous, they have lost any of the sense of fun that was there in the original. Woody Harrelson is just horrible as Cletus Kasady, the crazed killer who becomes Carnage. I was worried about what he might bring to the table ever since the post credits scene in the first movie and he managed to fall well below any expectation I might have had.

Michelle Williams looked like she didn't want to have anything to do with this movie and only showed up because maybe she was contractually obligated to do so. The paycheck for this film will help her continue to create those amazing movies and performances she is normally known for. I have been a fan of Naomie Harris ever since her turn as Tia Dalma in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies and not even that long stretch of loyalty could make me give her any kind of benefit of the doubt for this movie. She basically pulled out her Tia Dalma playbook and ran through the motions again maybe to collect a paycheck.

This movie is not the fun, action packed, comic book thrill ride you might be holding out hope for. It is annoying, it is uninteresting, it relies on the same tricks over and over, it adds absolutely nothing to the characters or the franchise, and I honestly can't think of anything good to say about it. Actually there is one thing that gives me a glimmer of hope but it's very spoilery so I'm not going to talk about it here because some of you may still want to go see this movie even after reading this review. Please don't.
