The Review:
Full disclosure, I have not seen the original The Souvenir so had no idea what happened in that story and also had no idea what to expect from its sequel. After watching the movie, I think it picks up shortly after the events of its predecessor although it's also hard to tell what's actually happening. The storytelling is random and vague and doesn't make a lot of sense. Honestly, I'm not sure what to say about this movie because really none of it made sense to me. It wasn't interesting at all, and there's a meta aspect to the movie from a filmmaker perspective that was beyond me.
You would think a movie about a film student making her first movie as her final class project would be interesting to me but the story found ways to be the opposite. It feels like a very personal story with a lot of commentary on the artistry of being a filmmaker versus the expectations and demands of a structured and out dated system that says you have to do things a certain way. I guess that's the one thing I'll take away from the movie is that it is a declaration of creative independence and artistic freedom.
