The Movie: The Tender Bar
The Director: George Clooney
The Cast: Ben Affleck, Tye Sheridan, Christopher Lloyd, Lily Rabe. Daniel Ranieri
The Story: A boy growing up on Long Island seeks out father figures among the patrons at his uncle's bar.
The Review:
This movie is about as Hollywood as Hollywood gets when it comes to how male and how white it is. I mean, the whole thing is like a paint by numbers young white male instruction manual, the type we have seen over and over and over again pretty much since Hollywood became a thing. The story is based on the best-selling memoir of the same name by J.R. Moehringer so it's mainly about him growing up as a young boy and then attending college.
The movie is reasonably entertaining but there's definitely a groundhog day feeling like we've been down this road so many times before. Kid gets life lessons from elder family members while family struggles with poverty. Kid of course creates opportunity to go to Ivy League school which of course includes opportunity to fall in love with a beautiful woman who is otherwise meaningless to the story.
I honestly don't believe I have anything else to say about this movie, it didn't grab me at all and it's not anything I haven't seen before in other movies so I'm just going to leave it at that.
The Verdict:
The Tender Bar is an uninteresting rehash of the type of story that Hollywood seems to love telling over and over again. Not a memorable movie in any way.
