The Movie: Spiritwalker / 유체이탈자
The Director: Yoon Jae-keun
The Cast: Yoon Kye-sang, Park Yong-woo, Lim Ji-yeon
The Story: A fantasy action film that revolves around a man who loses his memory and subsequently wakes up in a new body every twelve hours.
The Review:
This is a very interesting concept for a movie which I'm sure Hollywood will want to take and redo because that's what they do but anyway. I really liked the story and how it all plays out even if it is a bit predictable in the end, it's how it gets there that makes it most entertaining. When I sat down to watch the movie, I wasn't sure how they filmmakers would be able to pull off having a person's consciousness travel from one to another then another and so one or even why this takes place but I was happy with how it all turned out.
Of course, something like this requires several leaps off faith from the audience along with a willingness to forego logical thinking in favor of moving the story forward with loopholes that cover up the inevitable plot holes and believability issues. You definitely don't want to think too hard about the whats and hows and whys, it's better to just kick back and enjoy the ride because it's a pretty intense and action packed ride. It is also essential to get a believable performance from the lead to make the whole thing work and Yoon Kye-Sang does a fantastic job in just about every aspect of a challenging performance.
The K-Pop idol turned actor handles the action scenes, which are mostly gun-fu style fights, just as well as the more intense bits of drama that unfold as the story progresses. Along for the ride is Lim Ji-Yeon who I have seen previously in both Tazza: One-Eyed Jack and Luck-Key and each time has delivered memorable performances. The pair, working both individually and together, are pretty fantastic and they really do add a lot to the movie and are keys to why it is as good as it is.
The Verdict:
Spiritwalker is an entertaining action thriller filled with emotional drama and intense martial arts fights scenes. Yoon Kye-sang and Lim Ji-yeon are at the top of their game with strong performances that make this one of the better action movies I have watched this year.
