The Review:
Okay, so we're ten movies in now and honestly the absurdity of this franchise is getting a little out of hand, I mean, that's what these movies are all about but at some point they inevitably become a parody of themselves and I believe we are now there. The whole movie from begining to end feels like a bunch of disjointed skits that loosely tie together but are mostly there just to give each cast memeber something to do. Sure, the action is bigger and crazier than ever and neither logic nor physics has ever really been something that the filmmakers have paid attention to but still.
From what I understand, this movie is the first of a three part franchise finale and it does come complete with a major cliffhanger ending so dont expect this story to stand on its own in any way. There's no clear beginning or ending which is fine since we all know it's just one episode amongst many and who knows if it will even end after that. I could see more spin-offs like the Hobbs and Shaw movie that came out a few years ago. The possibilities are almost endless especially as more and more people get added to the already jam packed cast of characters.
Speaking of the cast, would you believe me if I told you that my favorite performance in this movie comes from the one person no one can see? If you know your WWE history then you know I'm talking about the one and only John Cena who plays Dom's brother Jakob and provides some of the best comic relief the franchise has ever seen. Cena actually seems like he is enjoying himself while just about everyone else is more like they're just going through the motions.
I've seen a fair amount of people praising Jason Momoa's performance as a highlight of the movie although I felt it fit in more with how the whole thing comes off as parody rather than what it's intended to be. The best way I can describe his performance as the main antagonist is that he really wanted to play a version of the Joker without actualy playing the Joker. There was nothing special or new about the character even if he was reasonably entertaining when compared to most of the other mailed in performances.
Honestly, I don't feel like putting much more thought into this review, you get the idea and I'm sure you already know what to expect from this movie and the franchise as a whole. If you just want fast cars, loud music, lots of fight scenes, and not much thought about how it all fits together, then you'll be just fine.
The Verdict:
Fast X furiously races towards a fast finish to a franchise that focuses on family, friendship, and fueled up festivities. As expected, the movie is big, it's action packed, it's kind of ridiculous, it's very cheesy, and as the stakes get higher, it just gets sillier and more absurd. Yes, there are post credit scenes, one of which I have to say its one of my favorite parts of the entire movie.
