The Review:
Dev Patel's debut directorial effort is an interesting mix of John Wick, The Matrix, Hindu mythology, and the ever present messiah trope which we have seen used time and time again within the world of cinema. I will say that Hanuman is an interesting deity to explore as the only reference I had ever heard being used before was in Black Panther when M'baku says "Glory to Hanuman' in reference to the Jabari tribe's gorilla god which was repurposed for the MCU.
Patel literally doesnt pull any punches when it comes to the fight scenes with lots of blood splattering, knife gouging, and kicks to the face although there was a minimal amount of guns involved which I thought was weird considering the underworld setting of the movie. The lack of guns does serve to keep the story going, otherwise Patel's character could have been killed off pretty easily at just about any point of the movie which would kind of ruin the whole thing.
While the movie is fun with lots of great fight scenes, I felt like it didn't bring anything new to the genre and just about every scene felt like it was reenacting moments from other films. I don't have much else to say about the movie other than if you're into this type of action thriller, you'll probably enjoy it just don't expect too much and you'll be okay.
