The Review:
Somebody in an office somewhere decided that they wanted to see a martial arts/action movie like The Raid: Redemption but set in a prison instead of a drug cartel ruled apartment building. Seriously, the two movies are fundamentally very similar with lots of brutal fight sequences and then also even more brutal fight sequences which, for me, is always a good time.
I like the fact that this movie has the type of indie spirit vibes that you want, a lot of which is showcased in some fun behind the scenes clips that roll alongside the closing credits, although in this case you also have to accept a few shortcomings from the filmmaking process. For me, the glaring weakness of the movie is in the editing as it feels like there is so much lost continuity in the story and there are major gaps where it's obvious that some characters had big parts of their story completely chopped out of the movie.
There didn't seem to be much effort in smoothing out the rough edges or paying attention to quality control when it came to having the story make sense as the process evolved but you know what, I really didn't have too much of a problem with this. The promise of great action is delivered from beginning to end and not every movie can be an all time classic so this was just fine and did its job as a piece of entertainment. Don't think too much about the story and just enjoy all the mayhem and bloodshed and things will be just fine.
