In 2016, I watched a lot of movies. Probably more in one year than I ever have before so there was a lot of acting to take in. Most are passable and get the job done adequately and then there's a few that make you cringe and wish the casting director had made a different choice. Finally, there is a select handful that really catch my attention and never for the same reason. These performances are so unique, often very powerful, and, if nothing else, they are just fun to watch on screen.
The Movie: La La Land is a comedic musical drama about a musician and an actress who inadvertently and inexplicably cross paths on their way to fame. The film was written and directed by Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) and features acting performances from Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, J.K. Simmons, Rosemarie DeWitt, Callie Hernandez, Finn Wittrock, and John Legend.
Birdman aka The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance is a film written and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu whose previous work includes 21 Grams, Biutiful, and Babel. The Amazing Spider Man 2 picks up the adventures of Peter Parker roughly where the previous installment left off. It was directed by Marc Webb and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Jamie Foxx, Dane DeHaan, and Sally Field.
Dreamworks Animation continues to raise the bar for animated features with their newest feature film titled The Croods. Nicolas Cage, Emma Stone, and Ryan Reynolds provide their voice talents to help create a prehistoric three dimensional adventure like you've never seen before.
One thing that has been missing from theaters lately is a really good gangster movie. Director Ruben Fleischer, who also directed the super awesome Zombieland, takes a shot at the genre by adapting Gangster Squad from a novel written by Will Beall and Paul Lieberman. With the combination of Penn, Gosling, and Brolin headlining the cast, there is no doubt audiences will be looking to see if this is a movie they can't refuse.
Right now you might be asking why I would say/Tweet something like that. Well, you know those movies that start out with some crazy scene that doesn't make a whole lot of sense in that moment, but then the movie takes you back in time and begins telling you how what you just saw is ultimately the culmination of the entire story?
For a movie like 'The Help' to work, the cast would need to be spot on perfect and their portrayals of each character would have to be carefully crafted to avoid falling in to cliche and stereotype. For the most part, the actors succeed at pulling this off and what we are given is a heartfelt portrayal of a turbulent time for women of all races and classes.
